Lighting for dark places?

Hampton North Councillor Geoffrey Samuel, wants to hear from local people about whether they think more and stronger lighting would deter anti-social behaviour in Hampton Nurserylands.

Cllr Samuel, who is also deputy leader of Richmnd Council and Cabinet Member for Schools, has asked the Council to provide brighter street lighting to deter criminal activity, and hopes this might be an answer.

He said: "There are parts of the Hampton Nurserylands where residents are concerned about graffiti and vandalism. They are delighted that at long last CCTV is being provided. But it cannot cover everywhere.

"The design of the estate is such that there are dark corners where yobs can indulge unseen in graffiti and vandalism. There is evidence that strong lighting acts as a real deterrent. Bright lighting silhouettes those engaged in graffiti. Security lights which snap on as people approach are equally effective.

" I have asked officers to investigate the possibilities. I would like to hear from any Nurserylands residents who feel that better lighting in their area is part of the answer to anti-social behaviour."
