Committee hears residents concerns

An application for a big new house on Garrick's Ait, the Thames island opposite Hampton Church and Garrick's historic estate and landscape, was rejected unanimously by Elmbridge North Area Planning Committe on 28 June on the grounds of its size.

This followed objections from many local organisations including The Hampton Society and th Friends of Garrick's Temple.

The decision made by the councillors states that: dwelling in form and siting would be too wide and deep resulting in excessive bulk too close to the riverside and little space around it for landscaping and replanting. As such it would be out of keeping with other buildings on the island contrary to the policies HSG5, 16; RTT 1, 2, 5, 7; Env 33 of the replacement Elmbridge Borough Local Plan 2000.
