Flood risk on the map

The Environment Agency has published more detailed maps to inform people about flood risk and flood risk areas.

The maps, which show areas liable to flooding from undefended rivers or seas, areas llikely to suffer extensive flooding, and areas benefitting from current flood defences but still in the flood plain, make the details of the flood risk in your postcode area simple to find.

Published on October 5, the Agency states that these are the most comprehensive, up-to-date and easily accessible map of flood risk from rivers and the sea across England and Wales.

The launch of the new map marks the start of the Environment Agency's annual awareness campaign to alert the public to the risk of flooding and help people to prepare in advance to minimise the damage.

Replacing the Agency's previous 'indicative floodplain map', the new Flood Map enables homeowners and businesses in the floodplain to see online - for the first time, and not just whether their area is at risk, but whether the risk is considered to be 'low', 'moderate' or 'significant', taking into account both proximity to rivers and the coast and the presence and protection afforded by flood defences.

Improvements have also been made to the look and feel of the map to make it more user-friendly and to aid on-line navigation.
