A new service for parents

Richmond's Cabinet has agreed a recommendation to establish an independent information service to help parents when they come to choose a school in the borough for their children.

Information will be available on all borough schools and the Cabinet agreed to invite independent schools in or near the borough and schools in neighbouring boroughs to participate in the scheme.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting, Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, cabinet member for schools and deputy council leader, said: "This will be a service for parents and it will also be open to independent school as well, for a fee, and similarly other boroughs and 16-plus institutions for a fee.

"It could be self supporting and it will help parents understand the information that is available to them."

The service will be able to provide parents with objective information to help them choose the school for their children when they start primary school at age four or five, move to secondary school at age eleven and move to further education at age sixteen. This will be in addition to the arrangements made by schools themselves.
