Crime Round-up, 14 December

ID Please
A shoplifting occurred in a jewellery shop, George Street Richmond on Wednesday 1st December at about 1.30pm. The manager had left 15 pairs of earrings on the safe behind the counter, and he then realised that at sometime they had gone missing. He viewed the CCTV and saw a white male, about 36yrs, 6ft1tall, wearing a long black coat. The CCTV clearly shows the male reaching behind the counter and taking the earrings.

Beware cowboys
On Thursday 9th December between 2pm and 5pm the landlady of a flat in Paradise Road, Richmond, required the services of an approved Corgi engineer. She phoned yellow pages to get some numbers and called one that was supplied. She spoke to a man named 'Mike' who arranged for an engineer to attend and fix her problem boiler.

The engineer arrived at 2pm on the 9th just as arranged and inspected the boiler; he stated that it needed servicing and a new flue. He took the old flue and went to the plumb centre in Isleworth, where it was subsequently found out that he had gone in and asked for the cheapest flue regardless of it being correct or not and paid by cash.

He then returned and fitted the new flue to the boiler, insisting that he was paid in cash £300.00; a receipt was given for the money. The landlady realised a few days later that the boiler was still was not working correctly so called out a British gas engineer, who immediately switched off the boiler stating that it was dangerous and the wrong flue had been fitted!

From the receipt which was faded and difficult to read the landlady checked the corgi website and found out that the reference number related to a company in Swansea. She phoned the company and spoke to the owner who said that she was not the first to have called re these men, and he had already reported the problem to Corgi and Yellow pages.

The suspect engineer gave the name 'Colin' he is described as a white male about 40years, 6ft tall, short blond hair, blue eyes, soft voice, London accent, stocky build. At the time he was wearing dark tracksuit bottoms, white trainers.

Perils of getting home after the Xmas Party
On Thursday 9th December at 23.40 hrs a 33 year old man was coming home from his office Christmas Party, he took a taxi to Sheen Lane and then decided to walk the rest to get some air.

During the walk he says that a male ran at him and head butted him catching him on the bridge of the nose. He fell and at the time of the attack he was phoning his girlfriend on his mobile, which was also stolen in the assault. The only description police have is male 16years, smartly dressed in designer clothing wearing a beanie hat.

On Thursday 9th December a small fire caused damage to the Scout Hut, Kerswell Hall, Wills Cresent, TW3 when an Evo-stick can was set alight and left on a wall by the front door at about 6pm, which caused bad scorching before it was extinguished by the fire brigade.

Attempted child abduction.
On Thursday 9th December at 8.50pm outside Tesco Express, Ashburnham Road, Ham, three schoolgirls were asked to get into cars with unknown men. The vehicles were first seen driving round the area - a white Ford Fiesta, a silver Fiat and another silver vehicle. At one point they parked 3 abreast across Croft Way, blocking the traffic and revving the engines. The vehicles contained a number of black males aged from 16 to 25 years.

The girls first saw the cars outside Meadlands Primary School and the occupants spoke to them, they made their way to Tesco Express to meet friends and when they arrived the vehicles were already there. The driver of the White Fiesta got out of the car and asked them the way to Ham Common, the girls gave the directions. He then asked them to get in the car, they refused but he kept telling them to get in the car. The girls got frightened and ran off home to tell their parents.

Description of the male that tried to get the girls into the car is black 18yrs 6ft tall wearing black jumper, black tracksuit bottoms and a black camouflaged headscarf. Was anyone in Croft Way when these cars blocked the road? Has anyone any ideas of the registration numbers of the vehicle concerned or any information at all regarding this incident?

Burglaries
Over the last few weeks there have been burglaries where nothing was stolen except alcohol - police ask is someone stocking up for Christmas? On Friday 26th November a shed in North road Richmond was broken into and a case of Champagne was stolen, there were some expensive power tools also in the shed, which were left alone.

On Tuesday 7th December, a couple had gone out for the evening and on their return home to Firs Avenue.SW14 they discovered that they had been burgled, all rooms were searched but the only thing taken was a bottle of champagne!

On Friday 10th December in St Leonards Road SW14 it seems that a mountain bike was left in exchange for 8 cans of Stella that were stolen from a fridge in a shed overnight.

On Saturday 11th December a shop in the High Street Whitton, was broken into overnight and £720.00 of scotch and gin were stolen.

Sound seasonal advice
On the run up to Christmas burglaries do increase, say police, and houses can have a lot more easily available items to be stolen, Christmas presents, money, expensive alcohol etc. Police would just like to make people aware so that precautions can be taken to minimize this.

Houses should be left secure at all times, keys kept away from windows and letterboxes, expensive items put away in cupboards, presents not left under the tree. It is also important to remember not to leave the boxes from new TV's hifi equipment etc outside the house after Christmas, advertising the new products now within.

How many warnings do people need NOT to leave valuables in cars? Police report that over the last week 9 laptops/computers have been stolen out of cars in the Richmond/ Twickenham area, the biggest haul being from a car parked at Kew Green on Thursday 9th December between 8.30pm and 10pm. A green Merc estate car was left locked and unattended, the window was smashed and £6,400 worth of computer equipment was taken from the boot of the vehicle.
