Government may monitor for West Nile virus

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, Melanie Johnson, has written to MP Vincent Cable MP confirming that the Government will consider monitoring Mogden mosquitoes for West Nile virus.

She states: "The Department of Health has put in place mosquito surveillance for West Nile virus in a number of locations and I will ensure that consideration is given to using Mogden sewage works as a potential monitoring location'."

There has been an ongoing problem of mosquitoes plaguing residents living around the sewage treatment plant on the Twickenham borders, although Thames Water has also been monitoring and carrying out a programme of spraying.
