Friends for the chimneys

Hampton Court Palace's chimneys from the roof

The Friends of Hampton Court Palace hold their first fundraising initiative on Sunday 10 October to raise money for the famous landmark chimneys, which are in need of conservation.

The event will be a two hour walk - with short cuts available for the young and old - around the palace and gardens, finding answers to a family quiz, and with a prize for the best completed entry.

The palace chimneys are greatly admired by visitors and local people alike, and it is said that every one is different. However, the soft hand-crafted bricks have been heavily eroded over the centuries by the extremes of the British weather and pollution. The challenge is to raise £20,000 to support restoration of one of the stacks and the initiative will go hand in hand with the Friends' proposed 'sponsor a brick' campaign to raise money for the others.

Hampton Court Palace is managed by Historic Royal Palace a registered charity that receives no government funding and relies on the support of the public and the Hampton Court Friends.

Elizabeth Whiddett, manager of the Friends commented; ""We are very excited about our first fundraising initiative and hope that local people will enjoy the history trail and support our cause. It would be difficult to imagine the skyline without these magnificent chimneys."

Registration is at the front of the palace between 10.00 and 12.30 on the day, and there is a suggested entry donation of £5 for adult, £1 for children. Telephone 020 8 781 9791 or 020 8 781 9633 for sponsorship forms or download them here.
