Vote for the CPZ

Barnes Ward member, Cllr John Ross, has responded to doubts about the controlled parking zone for Barnes where fears have been raised about the loss of a large number of spaces, the possible future extension of hours of operation and the spectre of "Robocops" on scooters.

Cllr Ross said: "I have said to many people in and around Barnes that I want the whole of Barnes to form a Controlled Parking Zone, not necessarily one, but a number of CPZs, which will keep out commuters and also those who feel free to park outside the areas in which their house is situated.

"The Barnes area, within Richmond, is closest into Central London and people who live outside this area come in to be near Central London and enjoy cheaper fares. There is also a pressing need to rationalise the CPZs in Barnes and reduce the number of different categories.

"The shopkeepers in Barnes are losing business to outside supermarkets as there are not very many places to park for shoppers." Cllr Ross continued. "I really do not feel that the present system works where over 30% of people must vote and over 50% of that number must be in favour of a CPZ. This simply does not work in Barnes, for the reasons I have described above. Many people want to park in Barnes to get into Central London more cheaply.

"If the whole of Barnes, including the Ward of Mortlake & Barnes Common, comprise one area in which no other cars from outside the area can park, then we can get rid of those cars that come in from outside this area. If people reject this solution, then they only have themselves to blame. I urge those people who want to keep out other cars to vote in an overwhelming way for new CPZs."
